What was reported?
Thylacine survival reports concern a real, documented marsupial whose last known captive individual died in 1936. The unresolved historical question of when the final wild animals disappeared must be distinguished from the much stronger claim that thylacines are alive today.
Witnesses continued to report striped, doglike animals after 1936, and photographs and camera searches periodically renewed public interest. A 2023 study analysed 1,237 observational records to model the species’ geographic decline and possible extinction timing.
7 September 1936 dates the last known captive thylacine’s death, not proof that the last wild individual died that day. Later dates refer to unconfirmed survival reports and analyses.

The University of Tasmania’s release explains that different assumptions produce different late-survival estimates. ABC’s reporting also includes caution about the reliability of sighting records. Modelling an extinction date is not a rediscovery, and an unverified observation does not become verified because it enters a database.

Dogs and other familiar animals can resemble a thylacine in brief or poor-quality images.
