Rohonc Codex

Unresolved means the reviewed evidence does not settle the stated question; it is not evidence of a supernatural cause. Reports, hypotheses and established findings are distinguished.

The case record

What was reported?

The Rohonc Codex is an illustrated manuscript in an unusual sign system. Its provenance and interpretation have long been disputed, and modern work has offered a substantive decoding proposal rather than a universally settled reading.

The small book entered scholarly attention through a nineteenth-century collection. Its pictures include recognisably religious scenes, while the numerous signs resisted straightforward alphabetic substitution. Early allegations of forgery became part of the debate but do not establish a documented forger.

Date is scholarly discovery as described by the 2018 paper, not a manufacturing date. The marker identifies the holding-library context.

Evidence in the record

ManuscriptIllustrationsPaper evidencePublished code analysis

The manuscript, illustrations, paper and repeated sequences provide evidence. In 2018, Levente Zoltán Király and Gábor Tokai published a study proposing a code structure and Christian content, setting out methods for further analysis.

Competing explanations

Official and research context

Király and Tokai offer a structured reading proposal, but the accessible abstract alone cannot independently validate the complete decipherment.

Conventional explanations

An intentionally encoded devotional text is one serious explanation; artificial pseudo-writing or later fabrication remain historical alternatives requiring evidence. A published decoding should be judged by consistent readings across the book and independent checking, not the headline claim alone.

Arguments that remain contested

Dating, authorship and the degree of independent confirmation of the proposed reading remain unsettled.
