What was reported?
Mokele-mbembe is often presented in Western popular culture as a living sauropod in the Congo Basin. The documentary record is more complicated: translated stories, expedition expectations and older colonial accounts shaped the now-familiar dinosaur interpretation.
Herman Regusters’s 1981 Lake Télé expedition produced a report of observations and sounds associated with the creature. That document is preserved in Caltech’s repository. Later skeptical scholarship examines how the dinosaur image became attached to reports with variable descriptions and cultural contexts.
The year dates the Regusters expedition described in the archived report. Earlier colonial accounts and undated oral reports are not assigned this event date.
