What was reported?
Lights seen across the landscape near Marfa include demonstrable vehicle headlights. Whether every historical or unusual report has the same explanation cannot be decided from that finding alone.
Visitors describe distant points changing colour, moving, splitting or fading. The often-repeated nineteenth-century origin story was documented retrospectively. Modern viewing takes place across a landscape containing highways, ranches and strong nighttime temperature gradients.

Evidence in the record
A University of Texas at Dallas student study correlated observed lights with traffic and deliberate headlight flashes. Later spectroscopy research tested distances and light characteristics. These are case-specific experiments, but their results apply to the lights actually observed during those sessions.
Competing explanations
Official and research context
Instrumented observations have identified ordinary terrestrial light sources in studied samples; those measurements do not identify every older story.
Conventional explanations
Distant headlights distorted by atmospheric refraction explain many modern sightings. Other ordinary sources include fixed lights and small fires. A report predating motor vehicles deserves historical checking, yet does not by itself demonstrate a separate unexplained physical phenomenon.
