The case record
What was reported?
Electronics technicians Manuel Pereira da Cruz and Miguel José Viana were found dead on a hill near Niterói in August 1966. Lead eye coverings and a cryptic written schedule made the case unusually memorable.
The men travelled from Campos and obtained raincoats and water before reaching the hill. A note referred to taking a capsule and awaiting a signal. Reports differ about the discovery date and whether the masks were worn or held, so the scene should not be reconstructed with false certainty.
Broad August bounds accommodate conflicting secondary discovery dates of 18 and 20 August. The hillside coordinate is representative.

Evidence in the record
The note, masks, belongings and reported witness movements are the principal evidence. The public record lacks a conclusive toxicological result identifying what, if anything, the men ingested.
Competing explanations
Official and research context
The reviewed accounts leave the deaths unexplained, with toxicological limitations preventing a reliable determination of a proposed poisoning mechanism.
Conventional explanations
Accidental poisoning during a private experiment or ritual is a conventional possibility; robbery and intentional poisoning have also been proposed. None is demonstrated by the unusual equipment alone. No evidence establishes extraterrestrial contact or a general risk associated with Brazilian spiritual traditions.
Arguments that remain contested
The cause of death and intended purpose of the planned activity remain unverified.
