What was reported?
Kryptos, Jim Sanborn’s sculpture at CIA headquarters, contains four encrypted passages. Its final passage requires a distinction between recovering the intended text and independently solving the encryption method.
Three sections were solved years after the sculpture’s 1990 installation. In 2025, researchers found text for the remaining section among Sanborn’s papers in the Smithsonian’s Archives of American Art. Sanborn confirmed the discovery while stressing that it was not a cryptanalytic solution.

Evidence in the record
The sculpture, released clues and the artist’s archive provide primary material. Associated Press reporting in November 2025 described the archive discovery and planned sale of the solution records. Early accounts said the finders were withholding the plaintext from public release.

Sanborn distinguishes the 2025 archival discovery of plaintext from cryptographic decryption. The reviewed reporting does not supply a public reproducible solution to K4.
Conventional explanations
The puzzle was intentionally designed by a human artist with cryptographic assistance. Searching archives can reveal a message without demonstrating a reproducible decoding algorithm. Older descriptions calling K4 wholly unread therefore need qualification.
Arguments that remain contested
A publicly demonstrated method consistent with the complete final ciphertext remains distinct from privately possessing its plaintext.
