What was reported?
Hessdalen has a long-running collection of reports and recordings of unusual lights. Some observations remain unidentified, but that does not establish one mechanism for the entire collection.
Reports increased in the early 1980s, leading to a winter field investigation in 1984 and later automated monitoring. Witnesses describe lights of different colours, durations and apparent motions. The category can include different events observed under very different conditions.

Project Hessdalen’s technical report records cameras, radar and other instruments, alongside limitations and ambiguous correlations. Later project material provides further images. An instrument detection establishes a recorded signal, not automatically a solid craft or extraordinary performance.

Conventional explanations
Aircraft, vehicle lights, astronomical objects and camera effects must be checked before atmospheric plasma or other natural mechanisms are considered. Distances and multi-instrument time matching are especially important; uncertain geometry can exaggerate apparent speed or size.
Arguments that remain contested
A subset of reports lacks enough calibrated information for identification, and no single explanation has been demonstrated for all observations.
