What was reported?
The South Bridge Vaults are historic commercial spaces that later acquired a haunted reputation. They are also one of the few locations in this group examined in a published study of visitors’ unusual experiences.
Tour accounts describe sensed presences, cold patches and other disturbances in the dark chambers. Their former uses changed over time, and popular associations with the murderers Burke and Hare should not be treated as documented occupation of the vaults.
1788 is South Bridge’s completion year; modern haunting accounts and the 2003 study are separate from the construction date.

Evidence in the record
A 2003 British Journal of Psychology paper compared reported experiences at the vaults and Hampton Court. Experiences clustered in areas with haunted reputations, and environmental factors including lighting correlated with their location. The authors interpreted this as evidence that ordinary surroundings can contribute to the experiences.

No official finding establishing a supernatural cause was identified in the reviewed sources.
Conventional explanations
Dim light, damp, acoustics and responses to unusual enclosed spaces offer plausible contributors. The study did not establish a universal mechanism, and correlation is not proof that any one magnetic measurement caused a sensation. Reports can be sincerely experienced while their interpretation as a ghost remains unsupported.
