What was reported?
Nine hikers died after leaving their tent in severe winter conditions in the northern Urals. Recent research gives a physically plausible avalanche explanation for significant parts of the incident.
Searchers found the tent damaged and the hikers’ remains at different points downhill. Some victims had major injuries, while exposure contributed to other deaths. The fragmented recovery sequence and incomplete original records encouraged theories extending far beyond the available evidence.
The expedition’s final camp dates the night; later recovery dates are not conflated with the deaths.

Evidence in the record
Photographs, terrain measurements and injury descriptions underpin numerical modelling published in 2021. A 2022 follow-up documented avalanche activity in the area. Demonstrating feasibility does not reproduce each action taken that night.

Official and research context
The reviewed avalanche research supports a natural mechanism capable of causing an emergency departure and injuries; it does not reconstruct every subsequent action.
Conventional explanations
A small delayed slab avalanche, wind-driven snow accumulation, darkness and extreme cold can explain an urgent departure and subsequent deaths. The model depends on reconstructed snow conditions. Military-weapon and extraordinary explanations have not gained comparable evidential support.
Arguments that remain contested
The precise sequence after leaving the tent, including individual movements and timing of injuries, remains uncertain.
