What was reported?
Edward Elgar sent Dora Penny a short note in curved symbols in July 1897. Its meaning remains uncertain despite numerous proposed decipherments.
The note accompanied ordinary correspondence after a visit to the Penny family. Elgar later dedicated a variation nicknamed Dorabella to Penny, but the musical association does not establish that the note encodes music. The surviving image shows three lines of symbols with uncertain word divisions.

Evidence in the record
The symbol sequence and related alphabets in Elgar’s notes allow direct comparison. Applying a simple substitution from those examples does not yield an agreed readable text. The short length leaves many degrees of freedom for inventing a plausible-sounding message.
