What was reported?
The Beast of Busco was reported as an enormous turtle in a farm pond near Churubusco, Indiana. Attempts to capture it turned a plausible animal category into a spectacular size claim and a lasting civic story.
After reports in 1948, farmer Gale Harris and others undertook a much-publicised search in 1949. Divers, bait and efforts to drain the pond drew crowds, but the supposed giant was not captured. The often-repeated weight of about 500 pounds came from estimates rather than a weighed animal.
